Gone: New York Health and Racquet Club

A man allegedly went on a rampage in Union Square on September 4 and left a complete stranger dead in the process.

Police said that the attack may have been a hate crime.

Friends of Jeffrey Babbitt, 62, were shocked to hear about the random act of violence that left the gentle, retired train conductor in a coma, CBS 2′s Dave Carlin reported on Friday.

“I don’t believe that. I don’t know why that happened. He is very nice,” Igor Sapozhnikov said.

Babbitt was minding his own business as he walked through the crowd near the chess boards in Union Square when a man made a hateful announcement and began his rampage, witnesses said. “He said ‘the next white person who walks by I’m going to [expletive],’” one woman said. “His fist went in and the man’s head bobbed and he hit the ground and you could hear his skull hitting the ground.”

The man continued his rampage before demanding to see police officers.

We now know that the 13th St. parking garage will be converted into eight multimillion-condos, the priciest of which will be $20 million.

This open house will include new renderings of the building design, academic and social spaces, sustainability systems, and details about the construction schedule. As in the past, attendants will be able submit comments and ask questions of many of the principals, including New School staff, architects and professionals from the design firm and construction trades. The NYPD 6th Precinct Community Council Meeting

As part of the planned 2024 enhancements to our regular monthly meeting programs, this June meeting will include a panel of guest speakers from the NYC Department of Homeless Services and integral partner agencies: Chris Gonzalez, DSS Chief Strategy Officer, Kevin Perdomo, DHS Assistant Commissioner for Street Homeless Solutions, Tamara Felix, Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS) Community Outreach Coordinator. They will address the Homeless Crisis and how they are tackling this important issue in our neighborhood and what information our Community residents and businesses should know.
