Business on the Increase Around Union Square

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for, New York is coming back! With no curfew in sight, there is no longer the need to dine and dash, and all you night owls can officially carry on with your late-night plans. Whether you’re looking for the perfect dinner reservation, happy hour spot, or late-night adventure, head on over to Union Square-14th Street to kickstart your evening plans and celebrate the start of summer.

It turns out that the ground floor of the glamorous 15 Union Square West will contain not only a bank but also a Skechers shoe store. Just what we needed around here.

The New York Times reports on the new busway and the potentially positive effect it has on real estate prices, although it seems certain not everyone would agree.

The New York Times has a fascinating article about the deli across from the co-op on 13th St., reviewing its history as a Schraftt’s restaurant and talking about the importance of its now destroyed architectural details. But what’s really interesting is the revelation of the first details of what’s going to be built there: a ten-story building with one triplex, three duplexes, and ground floor retail. “As for the apartment house, which is being designed for an owner who bought the site this year, the architect says plans are still in flux but she will probably produce “a contemporary interpretation of the Fifth Avenue apartment houses in the neighborhood” — the same goal of harmony that Schrafft’s sought 70 years ago.”

Now in the neighborhood: City Space Suites, a loft on Broadway between 9th and 10th that offers fully tricked-out office space starting at $1,000 per month.

Next week (May 14 to May 18), Superstructure work will continue at the 18th floor level. The superstructure concrete work will be completed on the building buy the end of the month. Deliveries for the internal systems of the building have been ongoing and will continue, although they should not greatly affect the flow of pedestrian and road traffic.

This weekend the site will be open on Saturday, May 12th for superstructure related activities between the work hours of 7AM and 5PM as permitted by the City. To control noise levels within the site, work activities will be limited to the placement of formwork and concrete, plumbing and electrical work, rebar for concrete placement, using the crane and equipment to support all activities. Safety horns are used, and required by law, to coordinate lifting with the crane and to alert the workers of the danger overhead. We have directed the operators to limit the use of horns to one short sounding and to use the crane later in the day so as to avoid any excess noise. There will be steel work being done on the 5th Ave. side of the building. As a result there will be another crane on site to lift the pieces into place but it will sit in the site and will not affect pedestrian or motor traffic in the area.

Additionally, Con Ed will be doing street connections on 14th street.
