The magazine shop and discount store on the north side of 14th west of 5th are both gone. What is next?
Check out Breads Bakery
, on 16th St. just west of Union Square. It’s really good.
Yes, it happened. Spice has replaced Tong on 13th St. Too bad. Tong was an unusual take on Thai. Perhaps too unusual for the masses. Next question: what will become of the Spice space? Let’s hope it’s not destined to become a bank.

The deli at the corner of University and 13th will become Qdoba, a chain of Mexican fast food. More chain stores in the ‘hood. Signs of the times.
Your reporter visited an open house at 15 Union Square West. The verdict: the ceilings are incredibly high and the windows are huge. Fixtures are fantastic although overdesigned for someone with more sedate tastes. The most interesting feature: an interior atrium complete with 19th century ironwork and a skylight that will be restored. Incredible to see it. The big problem: these apartments are insanely expensive.
Rumor has it that the parking garage directly across from us at 12 East 13th St. is for sale and could be converted into offices, a hotel, or most likely 17 to 20 luxury condos. More construction to come????
