Joe Jr.’s Diner in Death Throes

Next week, 03/04/2013 – 03/08/2013 Material and equipment deliveries and installation work will continue on all floors inside the building. Roof work, work on the new sidewalks around the building, and the dismantling of the construction hoist on the building exterior will also continue.

The following week, 03/11/2013 – 03/15/2013 Material and equipment deliveries and installation work will continue on all floors and roofs. Sidewalk work and dismantling of the construction hoist on the building exterior will also continue.

We anticipate the take down of the 14th Street sidewalk shed to begin within the next 2 weeks.

This view shows the east side of 5th Ave. at 13th St. in 1911. In other words, it’s where the New School now has its main entrance. Down the block on 13th St. you can see the tallish building that is now apartments. Ah, the good old days. Note that even in 1911, those elegant brownstones had seen better days. Since then, three large buildings have stood on this block, so that’s one reinvention about every 35 years.

Pie Face, an Australian fast-food chain, has opened a few spots around town, including a brand new one at the corner of 13th and 4th Ave. An extensive menu of coffee, snacks, and pies–both sweet and savory–are available.

Here is the corner of 13th and 5th, looking at the NE corner which now, of course, is The New School. This photo dates to the 1930s. Interesting how many changes have come to this corner over time.

Here’s one problem we haven’t had in our bulding (yet): a bee swarm. Bee experts had to be called in last week to collect a swarm of bees at 4th Ave. and 14th. St. Weird.
