New York Times Speaks Favorably of 14th St. Real Estate

    Curbed reports: The curvy low-rise building at 61 Fifth Avenue, devastated by fire in 2006, has been marked for death ever since the structure—a former Scrafft’s luncheonette (see photo at top left circa 1940)—was sold to a developer in early 2008. An architect was quickly enlisted to draw up plans for a 10-story building with apartments and ground-floor retail, and it was made clear that the current 61 Fifth Avenue was too far gone to be preserved in any manner. Has the economy put a pause on those plans? Perhaps, but broker-blogger Andrew Fine reports that demolition permit was issued for the property in December, so the wrecking ball could come calling any day now.

  • Our Tall New Neighbor

    An update on our very tall upcoming neighbor:

    Greenwich Spire (aka “11 W 13th“) is now rising on the northern edge of Greenwich Village, adjacent to Union Square, where deck-forming is now visible on the 7th level of the eventual 30-story luxury residential tower. The team of Legion Investment Group & EJS Group are behind the 109,000 SF project that contains 34 for-sale units, yielding an average, yet generous unit size of 3,200 SF. Additional uses include, 2,400 SF of retail and 7 enclosed parking spaces. Leroy Street Studio will handle the interior design; however renderings for interiors have not been made available at this stage of the project. The General Contractor for the 502′-tall structure is Titanium Construction, who advertises a completion target of mid-2028. Corcoran Sunshine is marketing the property and should launch sales sometime next year. Greenwich Spire replaces a 7-story mid-century commercial property, last home to a branch of NYC Dept. of Social Services.

  • Bye Bye, Fourth Avenue Pie

    After 17 years of selling pizza by its weight, the appropriately named Pie by the Pound has closed on Fourth Avenue between 12th Street and 13th Street. June 30 was the shop’s last day.

    Here’s part of the message from owner Jeffrey Reiss on Facebook:

    It is time to say goodbye😭🙁😢. I want to thank the local community and beyond for supporting us and who have been our fans until the end. I will deeply miss the vegetarian, vegan and especially the Gluten Free Communities. Such beautiful memories of all the families and kids and my staff….that will last a lifetime. I will miss this place. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU.
