Union Square Park has new and improved free Wi-Fi. The service can accommodate up to 250 people simultaneously using wireless devices, from laptop computers to iPhones and other P.D.A.’s. Two Altai A8 antennas are situated on rooftops at the park’s north and south ends, providing coverage to users in the park, as well as the surrounding area There’s also a local community portal Web page with event listings and recommendations on places to dine and shop.

Can the Union Square area ever achieve zero waste? Many people and businesses are trying to make it happen.

The very trendy and popular Pop Up Bagels has added a new shop at 20 East 16th St. Enjoy.

D’agostino’s is long gone, and Agata and Valentina had to vacate so that the undistinguished building can be demolished and replaced by retail and apartments. Should be an interesting build. How high? Unknown at this time.

Here’s a 1910 view of the south side of 14 St. looking east from 6th Ave. from what was then the platform of the elevated train. As you can see, Macy’s was headquartered there (where Urban Outfitters is now) and expanded along the block over time as it grew. Eventually, the cobbled-together space got too complicated and the store decamped for its massive new digs in Herald Square. If you look closely at this building today, you can still see vestiges of Macy’s red star icon in a few places.
