This weekend the site will be open on Saturday and Sunday, December 7th and 8th for interior activities between the work hours of 7AM and 7PM as permitted by the City.

    To get a sense of the pulse of the neighborhood, check out the USP’s ANNUAL REPORT. It’s full of interesting plans and action items, such as:

    Public Space Activations: This summer, USP is rolling
    out new seating areas, enhanced landscaping, the
    second annual mural along the 14th Street Busway,
    and hosting an Oonee Pod Mini, a prototype for safe
    bike storage.

    Park Upgrades: In partnership with NYC Parks, USP
    will develop a Union Square Park infrastructure
    plan that includes upgraded utilities, irrigation, and
    bathrooms amenities, as well as a preservation plan
    of the entire district’s tree canopy.

    Since January 2021, 46 new businesses have opened in and around Union Square.

    Have a browse through Idlewild Books, on West 19th St. just west of 5th Ave. on the south side of the street. This travel specialist arranges all its books, no matter what kind they are–fiction, essay, guide–by location, so that E.B. White’s “Here Is New York” is right next to “Fodor’s New York.” It’s a novel idea that makes for great browsing. This is one of the city’s most pleasant independent bookstores. Good luck to them.

  • East Village Historic District?

    The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation reports:

    At a meeting for affected property owners last night, the Landmarks Preservation Commission unveiled two small study areas for potential proposed historic districts in the East Village — one on Tompkins Square North and one centered along Second Avenue between Houston St. and St. Marks. This is a preliminary step in their consideration of these districts; the next step will be a public presentation and hearing before Community Board #3’s Landmarks Subcommittee on Thursday, May 12 at 6 pm at BRC, 30 Delancey Street, btw. Chrystie and Forsyth Streets.

    The holiday shopping season kicks off in November with the opening of the popular Union Square Holiday Market, operated by Urban Space Management.  The market is open every day from Wednesday, November 25th through Wednesday, December 24th with the exception of Thanksgiving. Be sure to stop by for a variety of unique items including handcrafted jewelry, fine art, clothes, handmade ornaments, and toys for kids of all ages. Market hours are Monday through Friday, 11 AM to 8 PM; Saturdays, 10 AM to 8 PM; Sundays, 11 AM to 7 PM; and 10 AM to 4 PM on Christmas Eve.
