This hand-drawn map from 1926 identifies our building as a 5 and 10-cent store, which, of course, as Woolworths, it was, all the way until 2003.

  • Portuguese Films in Union Sq. Park

    Union Square Park will be home to New York’s first Portuguese Film Festival sponsored by the Arte Institute, kicking off  Thursday, June 2. The event is “the first of its kind in the United States,” and will screen twenty short films directed by Portuguese citizens – many of whom who have already earned European prizes or have been selected to Festivals such as Cannes. The films will be screened first at The Anthology Film Archives and the main Festival will be held at Union Square Park (North Pavilion). Admission is free at the Union Square Park screening although seats need to be reserved in advance.

    The Festival will simultaneously take place in Lisbon at Auditorio Carlos on the same dates (June 2-3).

  • All’ Onda Opens on 13th St.

    From the Times: “Venice was Chris Jaeckle’s inspiration for this duplex restaurant. “It has always had the most global outlook of any place in Italy,” said Mr. Jaeckle, the chef and a partner. “And that goes back 800 years.” But Venice is only a starting point. He also applies a touch of Japanese flavor to the typical Venetian rice, noodles and seafood. “With these ingredients, Japanese food has a lot in common with Venetian,” he said. Sardines with typical sweet-and-sour “in saor” flavors are artistically arranged Japanese-style. A touch of miso brightens razor clams. He interprets Venetian liver and onions with monkfish liver and adds a touch of curry to spaghetti with clams. Chris Cannon, the manager and consultant, has created a list with more than 36 Italian sparkling wines (white, rosé, red and even orange varieties) to pair with the food.     Next week (September 16 to September 20), material and equipment deliveries and installation work will continue on the academic floors inside the building.

    The following week (September 23 to September 27), material and equipment deliveries and installation work will continue on academic floors. This weekend the site will be open on Saturday, September 14th for interior activities between the work hours of 7AM and 5PM as permitted by the City.
