14th St. Coalition Alerts the Area to Huge Traffic Changes, Here’s How to Complain

Are you aware of the proposed MTA/DOT “L” train closure plans?

The MTA/DOT plans include a vehicular ban on 14th Street (between 3rd Ave & 9th Ave) for 16-21 hours a day:

 The ban will seriously impede the daily activities of thousands of 14th St. residents and businesses and will divert cars and trucks to residential side streets – with a 50% projected increase in traffic

The increase will be felt by the West Village, Village, East Village, Chelsea and the Flatiron Districts.

The proposed plans also includes a radical re-design of 13th Street with a two-way Bikeway:

MTA/DOT projects 2,000 – 5,000 cyclists DAILY on 13th Street 

The bikeway, coupled with a 50% increase in traffic, will seriously impede residential, educational, and emergency services on the street placing pedestrians and bicyclists at risk

The 14th Street Coalition is a growing group of residents and business that was formed in response to the MTA/DOT plans.

We ask the MTA/DOT to balance residential and transportation needs in a more equal way. They MUST consider the impact that will be felt on the quality of life concerns including air pollution, noise, congested streets and increased risks to pedestrians and bicyclists. 

We understand that the Canarsie Tunnel must be repaired.  We seek a temporary solution that is EQUALLY fair to residents, businesses and commuters.

    The New York Post reports this robbery just one block away:

    A woman who left her Union Square apartment to check in on a 102-year-old neighbor returned to find a well-dressed burglar grabbing $50,000 worth of her jewelry, cops said yesterday.

    The thief — decked out in a black suit and tie — had sneaked into an apartment building on University Place at 3 p.m. Monday and was prowling around for an unlocked door when he hit the jackpot at Linda Kaplan’s home, sources said.

    As the thief was stashing bling in a canvas bag, Kaplan, 76, walked in.

    She demanded to know what he was doing, and he responded, “I’m with the Fire Department,” according to cops.

    When Kaplan demanded to see ID, the 6-foot-2 bandit threw her down.

    “He grabbed my shoulders and pushed me to the ground,” Kaplan said. “I grabbed his legs. I tried to stop him from leaving.

    “Once he knocked me down, I started screaming for help.”

    Among those who ran to her aid was a painter working in an apartment upstairs. Minutes earlier, the thief had poked his head in that unit but fled when he saw the worker.

    Cops said the bandit operated like an “office creeper,” a well-dressed thief who looks for laptop computers or purses at unoccupied office desks.

  • Latest New School Construction Update

    Next week (February 13 to February 17), Superstructure work will continue at 5th and 6th floor levels.

    The following week (February 20 to February 24), we will continue superstructure concrete and slabs on the 5th and 6th floor levels.

    This weekend the site will be open on Saturday, February 11th for superstructure related activities between the work hours of 7AM and 5PM as permitted by the City. To control noise levels within the site, work activities will be limited to the placement of formwork and concrete, plumbing and electrical work, rebar for concrete placement, using the crane and equipment to support all activities. Safety horns are used, and required by law, to coordinate lifting with the crane and to alert the workers of the danger overhead. We have directed the operators to limit the use of horns to one short sounding and to use the crane later in the day so as to avoid any excess noise. Additionally 14th St. Con Ed Vault utility connection street work will continue per DOT Permit granted for weekends only.
