Zen Palate, Stripped
A sign of the times. The long abandoned Zen Palate restaurant on Union Square West has been stripped of its copper facade as high as human hands can reach. Copper scavengers on the prowl.
Mark your calendars for October 6, when beer drinking comes to Union Square Park at Torch and Crown in the northern plaza.
Opening: A Steve Madden shoe boutique north of Union Square on Broadway, a new high-end Japanese restaurant at 13th and 3rd, and Tong Thai Brasserie right across University on 13th.
Closing: That great magazine shop at the corner of 6th Ave. and 11th Street, which is very sad.
Community Board #3 has voted overwhelmingly to support designation of the proposed East Village/Lower East Side and East 10th Street Historic Districts. This is a major step towards preservation of the irreplaceable and increasingly threatened historic resources and character of the East Village. However, the Landmarks Preservation Committee must still approve the move.
Metro Drugs on West 14th St., the neighboorhood’s best source of cheap cleaning supplies, has closed. Oh, well!
