Wait, Wait, Wait, the Busway Is NOT Back
ByDonIn a last-minute appeal, a judge on Friday hit the brakes on the city’s plan to ban private car traffic from a stretch of 14th Street, NY1 reports.
A judge granted the appeal, which was filed in the state appellate court division, and halted the pilot program for the second time in two months. The decision forces the city’s Department of Transportation (DOT) to suspend its plans and likely move to appeal the sudden about face.
The ruling comes just three days after a judge lifted a temporary restraining order on the program and as DOT crews prepared to launch the 18-month pilot program between Third and Ninth avenues on Monday. The stalled pilot aims to block private car through traffic from the busy road to speed up bus commutes during work on the L train’s Canarsie Tunnel. Pick-ups, drop-offs, and garage access would still be permitted under the plan.
The busway was set to launch Monday at 6 a.m. It was originally planned for July 1.
Union Square Night Market, June 6
ByDonFor New York City’s foodies and fans of fresh and local eating alike, the Union Square Greenmarket has long been a staple for gathering all the goodies and tools necessary for a delicious and sustainable lifestyle. But it’s not the most convenient experience for everyone, with the market only staying open in the morning and early afternoon hours, leaving those with strict daytime work schedules high and dry.
Well, someone connected with the greenmarket heard the cries and pleas of the working crowd — and maybe recognized a chance to cash in on all that hard-earned money — and has worked out the perfect solution. The first first Night Market of the season at Union Square, sponsored by GrowNYC, will start this Friday evening to allow shoppers to sample everything fresh and fantastic the foodfest has to offer.
Running from 4:00PM to 8:00PM, the Night Market will include a variety of offering from local eateries and entrepreneurs. Take home raw ingredients and vegetables to master your own flavorful creations at home, or sample incredible eats from New York City’s most fabulous restaurants to satiate your tastebuds if you just can’t wait to eat until after you leave the grounds.
Try basil pudding with a strawberry granola bar on the side from Northern Spy, Moroccan spiced goat with a Greenmarket salad (complete with a honey ramp vinaigrette) from Casa Mono, or a good old fashioned grilled cheese from ‘wichcraft. All dishes are running around $7 to $10 a pop. Even better — the Night Market is also featuring a beer garden, where thirsty and celebratory patrons can kick back and survey their spoils with a frosty beer, wine or hard cider.
Who knew eating well and Happy Hour could be combined? The Night Market opens in Union Square on Friday, June 6.
Pilot Electrification Project for Union Square Food Trucks
ByDonSimply Grid announced today that it has launched a food cart electrification pilot in New York City’s Union Square. This is the first example of a mobile food vendor on New York City’s public streets using grid electricity rather than a noisy, polluting generator. Citywide, more than 3,000 mobile food carts create the equivalent pollution emissions of approximately 10,000 cars. This pilot, launched in conjunction with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability, Con Edison, the NYC Department of Transportation, and Closed Loop Advisors, will last for up to a year and abate up to 9 metric tons of CO2.
Simply Grid’s technology allows lot owners and municipalities to provide grid electricity to mobile food vendors which makes them cleaner, quieter, and more profitable. Electricity is made available to these vendors via outlets in industry standard electricity pedestals which have been customized with proprietary metering controllers. The controllers connect wirelessly to Simply Grid’s cloud-based platform which manages customer accounts, metering, and billing. The system allows vendors to initiate service with their mobile phones and connect to the electric grid with cables they already use with their generators. Grid electricity is a significantly cheaper energy source for food vendors, and it also eliminates the pollution and noise associated with running a generator.

ByDonNext week (October 31 to November 4), Contractors will finish excavating and loading out material. Concrete foundation walls and slab on grade work will conclude as well as underground electrical and plumbing work. DOT approved street connections to underground utilities on Fifth Avenue will progress. Superstructure work will continue at cellar, 1st, and 2nd floor levels.
The following week (November 7 to November 11), we will continue superstructure concrete and slabs. Street utility connection work will continue. A sidewalk shed will be erected around the perimeter of the site, subject to DOB approval, to protect pedestrians from superstructure work.
This weekend the site will be open on Saturday, October 29 for foundation and superstructure related activities between the work hours of 9AM and 5PM as permitted by the City. To control noise levels within the site, work activities will be limited to the placement of formwork, plumbing and electrical work, waterproofing and rebar for concrete placement and use of the crane and equipment to support all activities. We may pour a section of slab on grade concrete on Saturday. There will be no rock excavation or rock chopping.
