Reminder: New School Updates Available

Not exactly Occupy Wall Street, but this is what Union Square looked like on Labor Day 1882. Fun parade.

University Place is about to get a new, fun restaurant: the first New York outpost of Vapiano, a German-based chain of some 30 casual Italian eateries, which will open soon at 113 University at 13th Street. A Newmark Knight Frank team including Jeffrey Roseman repped the tenant and a Newmark team also repped the landlord, the Amalgamated Lithographers Union. Vapiano has locations in six other US cities. In Manhattan, it will have about 7,000 square feet on two levels in a long-vacant space. The asking rent was $200 per square foot. The chain, which calls itself a “fuel stop for grown-ups,” serves inexpensive antipasti, salads, pasta and pizza prepared on-site as customers watch. (Many dishes are priced under $10, according to Vapiano’s Web site). The new place also promises a full bar and “lively happy-hour scene.” Roseman chuckled, “It’s been described as a fast-casual cross between Mario Batali and Chipotle with uber-style.”

Next week (July 15 to July 19), material and equipment deliveries and installation work will continue on all floors inside the building. We will be working on the new sidewalk around the building on 13th st. Additionally we will be working on the roofs of the building.

The following week (July 22 to July 26), material and equipment deliveries and installation work will continue on all floors as well as sidewalk work.
This weekend the site will be open on Saturday, July 13th for interior, roof, and sidewalk activities between the work hours of 7AM and 5PM as permitted by the City.

For 17 hours each day during the L train shutdown, Manhattan’s 14th Street will be converted into a “busway” with very limited access to car traffic, reports the NY Daily News.

According to court documents from the MTA from a lawsuit regarding the shutdown, 14th Street, from Ninth to Third avenues eastbound and from Third to Eighth avenues westbound, will give priority to bus traffic from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week in attempt to mitigate transit woes. Manhattan residents will be granted vehicle access to 14th Street for pickups and drop-offs only.

Additionally, the Department of Transportation has revised its bike path plan, now calling for two one-way bike baths on 12th and 13th streets instead of a single two-way bike path on 13th Street, notes the Daily News.
“We’re solving, hopefully, the local mobility and access challenge while discouraging through traffic on 14th Street,” said DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg in a statement.

Last week, City Council speaker Corey Johnson announced plans to propose new legislation that would require the city to open at least two information centers to update riders about the progress of the Canarsie Tunnel repairs, give transportation alternatives, and create an ombudsman job within the Department of Transportation to monitor comments and investigate complaints about transportation projects.
