9 East 13th St. in 1939, Part I

Next week (December 19 to December 23), Superstructure and concrete work will continue at 2nd and 3rd floor levels. Sidewalk sheds will continue being erected around the perimeter of the site. The roof protection at USC Condo courtyard will be finished this week.
The following week (December 26 to December 30), we will continue superstructure concrete and slabs on 2nd and 3rd floor levels.
This weekend the site will be closed on Saturday, December 17th.
Looking ahead to the upcoming holidays, the New School construction site will be closed on Saturdays, December 24 and December 31st, also on Mondays, December 26th and January 2nd.

Next week (January 16 to January 20), Superstructure work will continue at and 3rd, 4th and 5th floor levels. Sidewalk shed along 14th Street has been opened and we will open the sidewalk shed along 5th ave completing the sidewalk shed work.
The following week (January 23 to January 27), we will continue superstructure concrete and slabs on 3rd, 4th and 5th floor levels.
This weekend the site will be open on Saturday, January 14th for superstructure related activities between the work hours of 7AM and 5PM as permitted by the City. To control noise levels within the site, work activities will be limited to the placement of formwork and concrete, plumbing and electrical work, rebar for concrete placement, using the crane and equipment to support all activities. Safety horns are used, and required by law, to coordinate lifting with the crane and to alert the workers of the danger overhead. We have directed the operators to limit the use of horns to one short sounding and to use the crane later in the day so as to avoid any excess noise.

In addition to the normal work this Saturday we will be installing a new crane on 5th Ave. that will service the site for the duration of the project. During the installation 13th St. will be closed as well as some lanes on 5th Ave.

The original branch of Crunch Fitness on East 13th St., which closed three years ago and has been vacant since, will become a new branch of Revolve Fitness, a spinning studio.

Check out Qi on the north side of 14th between 5th and 6th. It’s a Thai restaurant that comes with lots of philosophy about spiritual centeredness and such. You can eat, and you can enrich your spirit, or qi (pronounced “chee”). May be a little bit upscale for this block. We’ll see.

The 2011 “Summer in the Square,” at Union Square, provides early morning fitness, family fun for kids and parents, and live music every Thursday until Aug. 11.  In the evening, live music is presented, beginning at 6 p.m., from a diverse mix of genres like latin, rock, jazz, and folk and a mix of local and touring bands. The exception was June 30, when three groups performed. One of them, “Million Dollar Quartet,” is based on the grand recording session where legends Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis were brought together.
