Chicken Nuggets for All

Yet another single-dish restaurant opened its doors over the weekend: The Nugget Spot. Besides the expected chicken nuggets, this fast-casual joint also offers pork, fish, cauliflower, and mozzarella nuggets. There are also four different breading options, which range from coconut to Cheeze-it, and a long list of dipping sauces to go with. There are also a few sides, and the restaurant does serve beer, but only Budweiser at this point. Status: Certified Open. 230 E 14th St., 646-422-7426.

    The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation reports:

    At a meeting for affected property owners last night, the Landmarks Preservation Commission unveiled two small study areas for potential proposed historic districts in the East Village — one on Tompkins Square North and one centered along Second Avenue between Houston St. and St. Marks. This is a preliminary step in their consideration of these districts; the next step will be a public presentation and hearing before Community Board #3’s Landmarks Subcommittee on Thursday, May 12 at 6 pm at BRC, 30 Delancey Street, btw. Chrystie and Forsyth Streets.

  • Union Square Communication Screens

    Communication network City24/7 launched its first “SmartScreens” booths today at ten locations around Union Square. The 32-inch touch screens are affixed to phone booths, and provide users with location-based local news, transit updates, current events, and entertainment listings like restaurants and shops for free. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the system is also providing information on volunteer opportunities. Over the next few months, a total of 250 screens will be installed throughout the city. The ATM-strength screens can withstand extreme weather, and they include back-up batteries if power is lost. City24/7 is responsible for the installation and upkeep for the booths, which also have free wifi.

Shot for a tax survey in 1939, they show our block and are full of fascinating detail if you click on them to blow them up and look a little closer. Wouldn’t you love to stop off at Marty’s Luncheon for a sandwich? As New York races into the future, it’s quite a thrill to be able to look back and remind ourselves how things used to be.

    The Union Square Partnership is teaming up with Mount Sinai Health System and Paragon Sports to offer FREE flu vaccinations to the Union Square-14th Street community. To take part, you must register in advance for an appointment on Tuesday, November 1st. No insurance is required. If you cannot attend the clinic, please visit the bottom of our webpage for information about how to get your flu shot at several Union Square-14th Street pharmacies. There should be no cost to you with most insurance. Please note: the clinic is not happening at a Mount Sinai location, but instead at Paragon Sports at the corner of 18th Street + Broadway.
