NYU Scuttles Plan for Soaring Tower

Instead, they’ll build a squatter and bulkier version on the location of the current Morton Williams supermarket. Why the change? Because the community–and IM Pei–didn’t like it.
Should University Place Be Pedestrianized?
ByDonAn urban planner who has been looking around for ways to make the city more pedestrian-friendly (and to open up more space for protesting) wrote “Union Square could be greatly enhanced by following through on a 2010 plan to pedestrianize Union Square West. Also pedestrianizing University Place would be a bold step that could link Union Square and Washington Square Park, merging two vital public spaces into a permanent platform for open expression.”
That would certainly change the neighborhood.

Cosi = PinoMaximo
ByDonCosi, which closed on the corner of 13th and 6th a while back, finally has a new tenant: PinoMaximo, an all-things-Italian place specializing in pizza and gelato. Not open yet, but looks tasty.
Everyman Espresso Renovates
ByDonOn a recent visit to Everyman Espresso on East 13th Street, we were stopped by a sign saying the coffee shop will close for renovations starting June 25th. A barista inside who explained the work should take 3 – 4 weeks. After that, they’ll have snazzy new interiors.
