Lillie’s: A New Bar Nearby

A sign of the times. The long abandoned Zen Palate restaurant on Union Square West has been stripped of its copper facade as high as human hands can reach. Copper scavengers on the prowl.

From Gothamist: Reverend Billy climbed to the roof of the Pavilion building in Union Square last night around 6:30 p.m. to hang a banner reading: Not For Sale. While he was up there, he gave the passersby a lessn on why the historic free speech structure cannot be turned into a private, upscale restaurant; reminding people that the first Labor Day in 1882 took place there, and that one “shouldn’t have to buy a $15 appetizer to have access to this building.” Catch the nutty video.

Say sayonara to Sumile Sushi on 13th St. near 7th Ave. Started out as super high-end Japanese and morphed into expensive sushi. It always seemed overpriced, even before the recession. Here’s hoping something new and interesting will take over the space.

Yet another single-dish restaurant opened its doors over the weekend: The Nugget Spot. Besides the expected chicken nuggets, this fast-casual joint also offers pork, fish, cauliflower, and mozzarella nuggets. There are also four different breading options, which range from coconut to Cheeze-it, and a long list of dipping sauces to go with. There are also a few sides, and the restaurant does serve beer, but only Budweiser at this point. Status: Certified Open. 230 E 14th St., 646-422-7426.
