More Casualties on University Place

A new Panera express shop has opened at 110 University, the first retail shop to open in the pedestal of that high-rise apartment building since it was completed three years ago. The format is entirely new, will be 40% smaller than the average Panera café at 2,000 square feet and will be designed toward to go-customers with dedicated shelves for rapid pickup, a digital menu, tracking screen technology with detailed order statuses, and very limited seating.

When the New School builds its new building on the corner, one of its major uses will be to house a consolidated Parsons School of Fashion Design, which is currently scattered among many midtown buildings. That’s according to the New School student newspaper. So expect even more groovily dressed teens outside our front doors.

Reyna, the new restaurant that is taking over the Le Midi space in our building on the 13th St. side, is now about seven months late, but work is proceeding quickly. You may have noticed they have already installed not one, not two, but EIGHT AC units and fans on the roof of the courtyard, and we can only imagine what they will sound like when they all turn on. Imagine a 538-foot tall condo at 5 West 13th St., and imagine it holding just 36 units (three units less than our co-op). Well, it’s very likely to happen.

Regale Deli, on 5th Ave. north of 14th St., has closed. It was always a little dark and spooky, but it was popular, and now there is one less convenient deli in the neighborhood. If University Deli on the corner of 13th closes, we’re doomed.
