This is Union Square West in the ’40s. The reason all these buildings are so narrow is that the lots originally held townhouses.
It’s all happening in Union Square’s south plaza:
July 10thNext week (July 22 to July 26), material and equipment deliveries and installation work will continue on all floors inside the building. Asphalt work on 14th st will begin this week to tie in the finished sidewalk. We will be opening the new sidewalk on 13th st. Additionally we will be working on the roofs of the building. Furniture deliveries will take place in the afternoon along 5th ave.
The following week (July 29 to August 2), material, equipment and furniture deliveries and installation work will continue on all floors as well as sidewalk work.
This weekend the site will be open on Saturday, July 20th for interior, roof, and sidewalk activities between the work hours of 7AM and 5PM as permitted by the City.
From the Times: “Venice was Chris Jaeckle’s inspiration for this duplex restaurant. “It has always had the most global outlook of any place in Italy,” said Mr. Jaeckle, the chef and a partner. “And that goes back 800 years.” But Venice is only a starting point. He also applies a touch of Japanese flavor to the typical Venetian rice, noodles and seafood. “With these ingredients, Japanese food has a lot in common with Venetian,” he said. Sardines with typical sweet-and-sour “in saor” flavors are artistically arranged Japanese-style. A touch of miso brightens razor clams. He interprets Venetian liver and onions with monkfish liver and adds a touch of curry to spaghetti with clams. Chris Cannon, the manager and consultant, has created a list with more than 36 Italian sparkling wines (white, rosé, red and even orange varieties) to pair with the food. Looks like Blick Art Supplies will be leaving 13th St. in the spring and moving to 4th and 11th, where another art supply store once existed.
