NY Laughs: Laughter in the Park 2009

Laughter in the Park is New York’s only free outdoor comedy series. Every week, we present two hours of comedy at one of six different city parks. NYLaughs, Inc. is a unique non-profit that wants to change the cultural landscape of the Big Apple through humor. We seek to elevate the comic arts and provide laughter for free to New Yorkers on a consistent basis by producing free live comedy shows in New York City’s public spaces; from its parks and streets to its subways. We want to make New York a better place through laughter!

  • Our Tall New Neighbor

    An update on our very tall upcoming neighbor:

    Greenwich Spire (aka “11 W 13th“) is now rising on the northern edge of Greenwich Village, adjacent to Union Square, where deck-forming is now visible on the 7th level of the eventual 30-story luxury residential tower. The team of Legion Investment Group & EJS Group are behind the 109,000 SF project that contains 34 for-sale units, yielding an average, yet generous unit size of 3,200 SF. Additional uses include, 2,400 SF of retail and 7 enclosed parking spaces. Leroy Street Studio will handle the interior design; however renderings for interiors have not been made available at this stage of the project. The General Contractor for the 502′-tall structure is Titanium Construction, who advertises a completion target of mid-2028. Corcoran Sunshine is marketing the property and should launch sales sometime next year. Greenwich Spire replaces a 7-story mid-century commercial property, last home to a branch of NYC Dept. of Social Services.

  • Latest Construction Update: More of the Same

    “Next week (August 1 to August 5), Contractors will continue to excavate earth and rock, and load out material. Installation of bracing rakers, line drilling, lagging and sheeting around the perimeter will progress as well. Concrete foundation walls will continue along the perimeter of the site. Final adjustments to the access ramp within the site are ongoing. As early as Thursday, July 28th, the construction fence along the North end Fifth Avenue will be relocated to the curb line with pedestrians diverted to a walkway in the street as approved by the Department of Transportation. The following week (August 8 to August 12 ), we will continue with concrete foundation walls, line drilling, rock excavation, and loading out, as well as lagging and sheeting. DEP will continue to work on the water main along 13th Street. The site will be open on Saturday, July 30th. Work hours are between 9AM and 5PM as permitted by the City. To control noise levels, work activities will be limited to the placement of formwork and rebar for concrete placement, wood lagging, and installation of walers and braces. There will be no rock excavation, rock chopping, or hauling on Saturday.”

    From the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation:

    NYU recently revealed its draft Environmental Assessment Statement and draft Scoping Document for its massive proposed zoning changes and taking of public land to allow its planned twenty-year expansion in Greenwich Village. These documents provide greater detail about what NYU is planning, what the potential impacts are of their proposed changes, and how NYU will be required to analyze those impacts for the public review process of their application.

    Community Board #2 will be holding a public hearing on the documents and the response to them on Thursday, May 5 (time and location TBD). Following the Community Board hearing, the City Planning Commission will hold a hearing before the documents are finalized and the review and analysis takes place. This process is expected to take several months. After that, the public hearing, review, and approval process for the actual proposed zoning changes and transfers of public land may take place.
