Free Cooking Lesson in Union Square
ByDonJoin The New School’s Fabio Parasecoli for New York City’s first college pop-up class will at Union Square’s Greenmarket on Wednesday, April 20 at 11 a.m.
A world-travelled food and culture expert, Fabio leads The New School’s Food Studies program, which examines the cultural, political, and economic significance of how and why we eat.
With the Greenmarket as his classroom, Professor Parasecoli will conduct a unique cultural, historical, and environmental lesson in food – with the farmers as participating experts – as collective thoughts turn to spring produce, Easter dinners and Passover recipes.
At the end of the pop-up class, he’ll offer up a Greenmarket recipe and answer questions. The class starts by the statue of Gandhi at the south-west corner of Union Square–look for The New School signs!
A Conclave of Condos
ByDonTwo new condos will soon be on the rise just across 5th Avenue. The larger of the two will be at 31 West 14th St. (rendering pictured below). The other one is at 5 West 13th St., the former block-through office of Social Services. Residents of the 14th St. side of our building will recall how many people mistook our building, at 12 East, for the office at 12 West. It was annoying.
NY Times Talks Up Union Square

ByDonLast Friday, NYC Parks & Recreation, CYNTHIA-REEVES PROJECTS, and the Union Square Partnership officially cut the ribbon on LOTUS, the newest piece of temporary art in the Union Square Park Triangle. LOTUS was the creation of Seoul-based artist Jaehyo Lee. To create the piece, the artist meticulously carved, shaped, burned the individual wood elements attached to a steel armature that stretches 12 feet high. The artwork has certainly made an impression as passersby who can be seen at all times of day stopping to look and touch the new art in the triangle.
